Self-Directed Support

Self-directed Support (SDS) is support that lets you make choices about the way your social care is provided. This means taking control of the money allocated for your care needs and making informed choices on how it is used. We are a registered provider on the SDS Framework.

Who Can Direct their Own Support?

Here in Scotland, people can access a Self-Directed Support Payment when they’re assessed as needing a community care service.

You may be eligible for SDS if you’re:

  • An older person who has been assessed as needing community care services
  • A disabled person who has been assessed as needing community care services
  • In need of mental health services support.

How Does SDS work?

Self-Directed Support gives you control over an individual budget. It lets you choose how this amount is spent, to provide support that meets your agreed health and social care outcomes.

Your personal SDS payment can be:

  • Given as a Direct Payment (a cash payment) to you, the individual
  • Allocated to your chosen provider - where a council or funder holds the budget but you’re in charge of how it’s spent (sometimes called an Individual Service Fund or ‘ISF’)
  • Or, you can choose a council arranged service
  • Or, you can choose a mix of these options for different types of support.

We are a registered provider on the SDS Framework. Contact Falkirk Council’s Adult Social Services on 01324 506 070 for more information.
